Brief Pain Inventory Short Form

The Brief Pain Inventory short form (BPI-sf) is a validated, widely used, self-administered questionnaire developed to assess the severity of pain and the impact of pain on daily functions; it is widely used in both research and clinical settings. Each scale and individual pain intensity item refers to changes in osteoarthritis pain associated with medication use. The screener consists of nine questions which evaluate the impact of pain on a patient’s daily functioning as well as the severity of this pain. Patients rate their worst pain, least intense pain, average and current pain, and rate the degree to which these pains impact mood, work, relationships, sleep, and quality of life.
